Commercial Design /
Prototyping / Engineering
BioX
is Taufeeq's commercial solution for the biometric fingerprint
access control and attendance system, both functionalities fused
together in one package. The solution comes with Digital Persona FP
readers, high end software and user friendly, failsafe methodologies
and touch buttons for switching between attendance and access
control. The solution if being used by many organizations in the
corporate sector.
Taufeeq
at his own privately owned company Destiny Microsystems designed the
PROGMOSYS - Progressive Gas Monitoring System, an NGV measurement
and switching system that gives you accurate information on how much
gas remains in your CNG tank. This is the first product of its kind
in the market that enables you to estimate your car's overall
mileage and performance.
Taufeeq Elahi designed,
prototyped, manufactured and marketed the 2nd Generation, ultra high
precision CNG metering system. This designs comes with 16x2
monochrome LCD. Least count is 1 bar and is produced as an OEM for
custom installation in cars - followed by the 3rd Generation ultra
high precision CNG metering system. This design comes with real time
clock and temperature sensor. PROGMOSYS Maxima comes with a 20x4
monochrome LCD and has a least count of 1 bar. It is 50 times more
accurate than conventional CNG metering systems, and probably the
most accurate and vibrant CNG metering system in the world.
He designed a product
for the agriculture industry - named after the god of agriculture,
'Saturn' is a system for remote monitoring of harvesters. The
solution is fitted on all harvesters that are to be leased out.
Saturn sends the live status of the thresher to the control center.
It’s designed to report thresher sensor tampering, battery
disconnection or device intrusion to the control center. Backup
batteries and onboard chargers keep the device running even if the
connections are tampered. Saturn and its control center communicate
on GSM 1800 band.
Lead
designer for the SCADA at Crescent Jute Products Limited. The site
had a harsh industrial environment with 78% humidity, 39 degree
Celsius temperature with moderate levels of vibration and shocks.
The company needed to monitor its 52 spinning frames with a total of
5,200 delivery points. HMI, PLC and industrial micro controllers
were used to collect the required information.
He
is also the designer of the 2nd Generation Tracespin hardware, again
for the jute industry. This hardware is in commission in various
fiber mills across Pakistan.
He
has been the founder president of Engineering Students' Initiative; an
engineering organization busy in promoting professional engineering
skills through print and media, organizing workshops, seminars and
funding numerous engineering projects. Engineering Students'
Initiative was founded in the June of 2005 and is constantly working
hand in hand with its increasing members to achieve its goals.
In
2004, Taufeeq Elahi worked on an infrared based control system for
PC, turning it into Pakistan's First ever computer hardware that was
designed, coded, prototyped and manufactured in Pakistan. In January
2005, it was finally released. The product is patented to his name
under international laws.
To
provide a standard time to the University of Engineering &
Technology, Taxila, he and his team created the X-time : Atomic
Synchronized Clock, a full sized 5.5 feet stainless steel exterior
with redundant runtime mechanism and servers.
He
has been the designer of Advent Rising, a prepaid power system in
which the conventional power meter was converted into solid state
non tampering machine, prepaid card system developed along with the
whole establishment of a service center that has all the facilities
of an enterprise scratch card handling system. Power bill can be
paid in advance through any cellular phone or fixed line in the
country.
Taufeeq's
Voltage Analyzer ( TVA ) is a voltage measuring mechanism by which
you can acquire periodic readings on your PC. The system provides
excellent observational opportunity for transformer voltage
changes, battery charging and discarding rates etc. This system
supports 4 channels, means one can hook its 4 inputs to 4 different
points where voltage monitoring is required with respect to time.
The hardware uses versions of software called TVA also coded by me,
supported on windows platform 98-XP. The hardware and software
communicate through standard serial port.
A recent prototype
includes a system consists of a console having two monochrome LCDs,
soft keys and keypads placed on each table in a café. The menu is
displayed on the first LCD, and the customer can select the items
and their quantities though soft keys/keypad. Selected items and
their quantities are displayed on the second LCD, where items can
also be deleted as per customer’s choice. In the café kitchen, a
server runs an Access database that has username/password/credit
information for all customers. The customer confirms the order, and
selects either of the two payment modes: Prepaid or Cash. Incase of
prepaid, the user gives his username and password. The order is
placed digitally to the kitchen and displayed on a large LCD screen,
and remaining balance is reported to the customer along with
estimated time of serving. Warnings are sent to the users console
incase of wrong username or other errors like insufficient balance
in account.
Another prototype
device for the fruit industry includes an intelligent fruit sorter
which is a system for sorting fruit with respect to its diameter.
Primarily used for apple, the sorting system consists of a conveyer
belt and an electronic distributor. The system is able to sort fruit
into four different categories. The fruit is dropped on the conveyer
belt by a feeder, the conveyer automatically starts to move and when
the fruit reaches the mid of the belt it is scanned for its
diameter. The results are sent by the controller to the workstation
running high-end software that monitors different parameters of the
sorting process and issues a command to the servomechanism operating
the distributor for placing the fruit in its target bucket. The
software is flexible and presents run time charts and analysis of
the whole process.

A prototype was
designed for the power distribution company that used GSM band for
sending bill information to the consumer. 'GEMMS' is a system that
can be attached to conventional rotating disc meters as well as
electronic solid-state meters. The system sends power bill (in
rupees) as SMS to the user’s mobile number once in 24 hours. The
destination mobile number, time of sending the message and current
time can be adjusted through 12 button keypad and 3 soft keys
attached with the LCD. A slab-wise tariff plan is followed by the
system and calculates the bill accordingly. First 100 units are
charged at Rs.3/unit. Next 200 units are charged at Rs.4/unit. Next
300 units are charged at Rs.5/unit and all other units after that
are charged at Rs.7/unit.
Design
and full scale deployment of automation system for a hinged gate at
my personal residence in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Mechanism uses foam
rubber wheels powered by Mitsubishi car window motors to open each
gate pan. Electronic locking, automatic siren, automatic lights,
motor suspensions, RF remote controls, manual controls and lock-down
protocol implemented. Option to open any of the two gate pans, or
both pans at once, and closing them through remote control. System
backed up by a 40AmpHr battery in case of mains power failure.
Advanced
management of water supply Measures water level of underground and
overhead water tanks by a non-contact method, indicates them by a 10
LED display on a console. Controls water pump through 3 different
modes. (1) Automatic Mode (2) Timer Mode and (3) Manual Mode. Second
Generation Advanced water management control has precision level
detection and can presnt water level with 1% accuracy. Display
provided is a monochrome LCD.
A small telephone
add-on was prototyped some time back. It consists of a console
fitted near the landline telephone set. The console has several
buttons, each having a person’s name against it. To dial a call, one
has to simply push the appropriate button in front of his/her name,
and the device automatically sends DTMF over the telephone line and
dials the number. It is a device built for disabled/elderly who have
trouble in reading/memorizing/dialing numbers manually.

The application is standalone and Microsoft based.
Taufeeq’s
Voltage Analyzer 1.0 (released under GPL license) is open source and
is available for free download. Software requires appropriate
TVA hardware connected to the PC via serial port. Maximum possible
voltage that can be read is 15 volts. The software allows the
operator to adjust the total time of observation, the interval
between each reading and many other parameters. A chart is generated
at run time as the observation is in progress showing the periodic
changes in voltage on all 4 channels.
